Editorial Policy

Brésil(s). Sciences humaines et sociales publishes original articles in French. Each edition is made up of a thematic dossier (six titles), directed by an international team, and miscellaneous articles (three or four titles), selected from among those received by the journal, accompanied by a series of academic reviews. All articles are evaluated anonymously by ad hoc external experts. Members of the editorial committee are not allowed to publish in the journal. Brésil(s) appears twice a year, in May and November.

Dossier projects are to be submitted to the editorial committee, which examines them, prioritizing projects submitted by international teams. If the proposal is selected, it may be amended during a discussion within the editorial committee, with the presence of those responsible for the dossier. Articles may be chosen via a call for papers or solicitation, but, in all cases, they will be examined in their original language by the editorial committee. If selected, the article will be passed to at least two ad hoc expert reviewers for evaluation, who are invited to fill in the form provided by the journal, attaching a reader’s report to it. In cases where modifications are requested, the editorial committee will verify that these are done in agreement with the reviewers. Where necessary, translations are carried out after the article has been definitively accepted.

Articles received directly by the journal will first be subjected to examination by the editorial committee. Authors will be informed of the decision reached. If an article is selected for evaluation, it will be sent anonymously, in its original language, to at least two ad hoc reviewers. Authors will be informed immediately upon receipt of the reviewers’ decisions and suggestions. Following any modifications, the article will be examined for a second time by the editorial committee, who will make a decision regarding its definitive acceptance in consultation with the reviewers, where necessary. Translations will be carried out only after the article has been accepted.

Open archive policy

The journal encourages authors to deposit their articles in open archives by using the direct link (DOI) that leads to the consultation of each text on the Brésil(s) website. We do not encourage the deposit of articles as PDF files.

Ethical statement

Brésil(s). Sciences humaines et sociales, henceforth referred to as “the journal”, conforms to the spirit and the letter of explicit scientific ethics. The journal requires all those involved in its various phases of its editorial process to abide by the rules set forth below.

The journal follows the practices defined by the CNRS Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), particularly regarding the activities of the editorial board and the editorial committee, as well as those of external reviewers.

1. Concerning the journal and its editorial bodies

1.1. Evaluation Process

All manuscripts received spontaneously or after solicitation are examined as soon as possible by the editorial board. They are analyzed by a plagiarism detection software. If borrowings that do not respect the rules of citation are detected, the proposal is rejected. Since the journal only publishes original articles, this rule also applies to self-borrowing.

If the proposed article does not fit into the editorial policy of the journal, as defined on its website, or if it does not comply with the scientific standards of its disciplinary field, it may be rejected by the editorial board without going through a blind peer review.

Apart from book reviews, tributes to departed colleagues, and introductions written by the dossier editors, all articles selected by the editorial board according to the above criteria and intended for publication in a “dossier” or in the “varia” section are subject to an external peer review process. For this purpose, the articles concerned are made anonymous and evaluated by at least two external ad-hoc reviewers whose reports, also anonymous, are communicated to the authors in their entirety. If the evaluation of an article by two reviewers proves to be contradictory or insufficient, a new evaluation is requested.

After deliberation by the editorial board (extended to the heads of thematic “dossiers” for articles published in this framework) based on the evaluation reports, a proposal for an article may be accepted, accepted subject to modifications (major or minor) or rejected.

In the case of conditional acceptance, the editor and editorial board make a final decision based on the author's consideration of the reviewers' suggestions and comments. Reviewers are asked to confirm that their comments have been considered.

If the proposal is rejected, a detailed report explaining the reasons for the decision is sent to the authors.

The evaluation is conducted on the articles in their original language. If a translation is necessary, it is carried out under the supervision of the journal and revised by the latter. The revised version is sent to the authors for comments, suggestions for modifications and/or approval.

1.2. Conflicts of Interest

In the event of a conflict of interest with one of the authors or with the content of a proposal, the members of the editorial board (extended to the team responsible for the “dossier”) concerned will recuse themselves.

1.3. Impartiality

Each paper submission is examined impartially, and its merits are judged without any other criteria than its scientific contribution.

1.4. Confidentiality and Use of Data

The evaluation by the editorial board (extended to the heads of the “dossier” when the case arises) and by the peers is strictly confidential. Exchanges about a manuscript are not shared with anyone outside the process. No new information, arguments, or interpretations from a submitted article are used, disclosed, or made public prior to publication of the article without the explicit written consent of the authors.

1.5. Error Detection

If the journal detects or learns that an article it has published contains a significant error, it immediately informs the authors, who must promptly either submit corrections or provide additional evidence to support their writing. The online edition of the journal will indicate that a correction has been made and the date of the correction.

2. Regarding the external experts involved in the evaluation of the articles

2.1. Recusal

Experts who feel insufficiently qualified or who do not have the time to evaluate the article submitted should inform the journal as soon as possible. The same applies to those who feel too close to the research supporting the article or who think they recognize the author of the text.

2.2. Confidentiality and Use of Data

The peer review process is strictly confidential. Discussions about a manuscript are not shared with anyone outside the process. No new information, arguments, or interpretations from a submitted article are used, disclosed, or made public prior to publication of the article in the journal without the explicit written consent of the authors.

2.3. Impartiality

The quality of the proposed article is judged objectively, respecting the intellectual independence of the authors. The evaluators express their points of view precisely and explicitly, based on clearly formulated arguments. Ad hominem criticism is not permitted. Failure to comply with this rule will invalidate the expert report.

2.4. Multiple or Redundant Publications

Experts must inform the editorial direction of the journal of any substantial similarity between the manuscript they are reviewing, and any text published or submitted simultaneously to another journal of which they are aware.

2.5. References

Experts inform the editorial direction of the journal of the use of unsourced work in the article they review.

3. Regarding the author(s)

3.1. Originality and Plagiarism

Authors agree to submit to the journal only original and unpublished proposals that do not infringe on the intellectual property rights of any other person or entity.

3.2. Conflicts of Interest

Authors must inform the journal's editorial direction of any potential conflict of interest, whether professional, financial, or otherwise, that may influence their approach. Authors must disclose all sources of funding for the research that led to the contribution.

3.3. Acknowledgement of Authors in the Case of Proposals Submitted by More than One Author

The authors submitting the article to the journal ensure that only those authors who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design and interpretation of the submitted study are included in the list of co-authors. They ensure, reciprocally, that no one is overlooked. They ensure that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have confirmed the decision to submit it for publication.

The journal provides an opportunity to publicly acknowledge the contributors to the paper without claiming authorship.

3.4. Defamatory, Fraudulent, or Inaccurate Statements

Authors warrant that the proposed article does not contain defamatory, fraudulent, or knowingly inaccurate statements.

3.5. Multiple or Redundant Publications

Authors warrant that their proposed article has not been previously published and is not based in whole or in part on previously published work. They do not send their proposal to several journals at the same time.

3.6. References

Authors confirm that they cite appropriately all publications used in their work.

3.7. Editorial Treatment

Authors authorize the journal’s editorial team to suggest changes to their article and participate, in close collaboration with the editorial team, in the entire editorial review process.

3.8. Error Detection

If authors discover a significant error or inaccuracy after the publication of their article, they agree to inform the journal promptly and to cooperate with the journal in retracting or correcting the article.

3.9. Digital Publication and Publishing Contract

Authors authorize the distribution of their article in digital format on the OpenEdition Journals portal. The journal undertakes to provide each author with a publishing contract that complies with current legal standards.
